Environment Policy:
Our Commitment to a Sustainable Future
At Rocking Horse, we've always believed in making great films. But we also believe that how we make them matters just as much as the final product. That's why we're so committed to doing our part for the planet and our community. Our journey to becoming a truly sustainable company is a big one, but we're excited to share the progress we've made and where we're headed.
We're proud of the huge strides we've taken in just one year. Back in 2023, our carbon footprint was 98.5 tCO₂e. By 2024, we had brought that down to 58.2 tCO₂e, a massive 41% reduction. We've eliminated our direct carbon emissions (Scope 1), switched to 61% renewable electricity, and cut our business travel emissions by a remarkable 96%. We're not stopping there. We're committed to being a Net Zero company by 2040, with ambitious goals to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 95% and our Scope 3 emissions by at least 35% by 2030.
On set, we're changing how we work. We've switched to LED lighting and energy-efficient equipment, and we're embracing virtual production and digital-first workflows to cut down on waste from set builds. We now prioritize low-carbon transportation and aim to reduce our travel emissions by 50% by 2030, prioritizing electric or hybrid vehicles whenever we can. We're also using virtual location scouting to minimize unnecessary travel.
We’re rethinking our supply chain. We know that to make a real difference, we have to work with our partners. We’re committed to prioritizing local and sustainable suppliers and will be evaluating them based on their own carbon reduction targets and sustainability policies. We’re also developing a new "buy used or rent" policy for equipment, and a "no single use" policy on set for catering, lighting, and sound suppliers. This helps us build a more circular economy and reduces waste at every stage of production. On our own sets, we're aiming for a "zero waste to landfill" policy and will be establishing a system to donate, rent, or sell materials that can't be reused.
Beyond the environment, we’re focused on our people and our values. We want Rocking Horse Pictures to be a truly diverse and inclusive workplace. We are working towards increasing representation of underrepresented groups in our team and creative output, with an aspiration of achieving at least a 10% improvement by 2030. We also believe in fair pay, which is why we’re proud to pay all our employees and regular contractors at or above the UK Real Living Wage. Supporting our team’s wellbeing and professional growth is a core part of who we are. In addition, every year Rocking Horse selects a charity partner and produces a pro bono film to amplify their voice and give back to the community.
Finally, we believe in being open about our progress. We track our carbon footprint every year with an external partner, Positive Planet, and we're proud to share our progress through platforms like CDP and the SME Climate Hub. We have a dedicated Environmental Committee and our Co-founders are responsible for holding us accountable to our ESG goals. Our policy is a living document, and we’re always looking for new technologies and ways to improve. We believe that by working together with our team, clients, and industry peers, we can help build a more sustainable future for the world of video.
